Jefferson Fox Hunters - About

The Jefferson Fox Hunters were established in 1999 by, avid predator hunters and Jefferson locals, Matthew Smith and Kevin Baum.  We continue to thrive each year with new members.  We have recorded 224 kills in 12 seasons.  There are currently 29 members; 17 active and 12 inactive.  There are also 9 former members that have recorded kills with the organization but no longer hunt with JFH.

The club is largely made of up close friends and family of the founders.  However, other trustworthy hunters that will show commitment to the organization will be considered.

So you want to become a member?  There are no fees.  We want avid and honest hunters.  Membership requires a JFH kill, trust, commitment, and dedication to the sport of hunting as well as to the JFH organization; this includes the other JFH members.  JFH reserves the right to revoke membership at any time.

Our home base lies in the small town of Jefferson, PA.  Jefferson is located in York County, which resides in the South Central part of the state.  It is about 10 minutes north of the MD state line and about 4 miles South of Spring Grove.  In relation to some of the larger towns and cities, Jefferson is about 10 miles SE of Hanover and about 15 miles SW of York.

This location provides for some of the best fox hunting in the state.  It is largely due to the population density of foxes in the region.  South Central PA is near the top of the list when it comes to foxes per square mile.  The area consists of rolling farmland with an abundance of thick woodlots and brush, providing habitat for a diverse number rodents and cottontail rabbits.  Public land in this area is not plentiful and the majority of land JFH hunts is private, requiring landowner permission for access.

Although the PA fox season begins near the end of October, we do not begin hunting until mid-Dec. when the PA deer seasons are ending.  By waiting, we get to do our hunting in winter with the colder weather.  This allows for prime furs and the predators are often searching more for food by this time.  We are able to have more members attend our weekend drive hunts with the deer seasons complete.  Check out our Techniques page for details on JFH hunting tactics.
